ÐÕÕяMÅÑ ÐÏÂя¥ 13-16We are at war I was a doorman when racism, homophobia & football violence was at its highest. They were proper wars, real ongoing battles. People would go out in teams purey to go out & commit hate crimes. So when you put on the lil bow tie & stand on a pub door you were putting a target on yourself. There might be four of you & 2,000 in the club. If you didn't win fights- you were sacked.
You're havin a girraffe!
I was working in this pub one night & this guy had fallen to sleep, he'd been there for ages & wasn't movin. I thought he'd just drank too much. I was gonna leave him there for a while longer to sleep it off- I thought he's not hurting anyone. Turns out he was dead, he had been drinking earlier & must have been dead for hours with all the drunken nutters around him not even noticing!
When the doors close One night there was murders in the club & I wasn't even there. Every week we did an 'open box' thing: everyone put money in & if your number come up you got the lot. When the number was announced, the whole club would go silent. This particular night I asked for a mate to put my money in for me. The jackpot was £2,000 & my number came up. Everyone knew I was running the club & thought it was a fix. The place erupted into a full scale drunken riot; police turned up with dogs to get everyone out. The other doormen had a few names for me too. I didn't even need the money, so the next night I put it back in the box with the next lot of cash. Some fat dude who stank of sick won it!

The doorman- a complicated man who has myriad emotions stirring underneath his calm facade, the bouncer is a strange breed of individual, loved by few, hated by many but demands respect by all. These individuals encounter the very worst that humanity has to offer: alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, anger, theft and, obviously, violence. -they step out of the world of sedate reality into the underbelly of the nightlife world of a bouncer. It can be a thankless job and yet rewarding at the same time. Often chastised as 'dumb thugs', the backgrounds & personalities of bouncers are as varied as the nightclubs & bars they work. Never underestimate the bouncer & his abilities. The bouncing world offers some of the most entertaining stories to be found. We couldn't make this stuff up if we tried. Truth is stranger than fiction & the bouncer is eyewitness to it all. The respect I have for my fellow 'brothers in arms' runs deep. There isn't really a 'set' of people who are more dangerous but I would say the most active fighters I've met over the years are 'pikeys'. Their lives seem to revolve around brawls; they love to tear-up, they don't even mind losing. I f they lose they just come back with another couple of big lumps & start again. Naturally the more you do something the better you get at it.
Tactics & environment
I am not that big a guy- I average 'bout 2 inch shorter in hieght than my main men and 'bout 3 st lighter. I haven't lost a situation yet but this isn't always to do with how I fight. Why fight if you don't have to? Size doesn't make a difference but mental aggression & attitude does.
Temptation
We get it or are offered it every night. I don't know why birds just love big naughty geezers that get them a free drink or two & them escort them to a fire exit when they're plastered to give 'em 1- I ain't a scooby why- they just do!
But girls do come on to doormen alot. Now most doormen look like regular punters, nothin special- we must just have a 'gangster aura'.
The tossers you meet
Week in, week out we get the same idiots causing trouble in the clubs & pleadin innocent when they find out they've been banned. They can't just be thrown out & leave it at that, they have to make a big song & dance bout it- they're fine pickin fights with smaller guys or women but when a doorman throws them around a bit it dents their pride- they're always the first to get the cops involved. Innocent punters effected by these tossers know the doormen will sort it so they don't fetch the dibble.

I have found that all teams have at least one guy who can defuse 95% of situations before it kicks off. Taf was a 6'4, 23 st monster- I never knew anyone like him. He would spot trouble, get in the middle and start crackin jokes and before you knew it everyone was laughin and everythin would be ok.
The funniest guy I ever worked with was Dazzler- who used to shave abs muscles into his body hair. Then there was Big J who walked around on a lead, wearin big flower sunglasses and barkin at the punters.
The two hardest were Tommo & Psycho neither ever radio'd through for back up- we'd get to where the trouble had been to find the pair of them stood back to back in a pile of laid out bodies.
Crime & punishment
The Rex in Stratford was a nightmare when we first started there. There were people gettin mugged, beaten up, cars gettin broken into or torched. The next day I went into Stratford and walked around the venue and found all the hidin places and escape routes that the locals used. The next time we worked there they didn't know what hit em. We were constantly beatin em up and ambulsin them when they were tryin to mug people.
After about 2 hours we'd cleaned up the whole place, then the dibble turned up at about 1:30 askin to speak to me- I went thinkin I was gonna get nicked. I was surprised when I was pulled to one side and 1 said: "We've been watchin you & your guys on cctv & tho we find your way of workin unethical, it bloody works. We haven't had one incident reported & last time you were here were thirty." I didn't get a community award tho!
Drugs & dealers
There was this group of lads comin into the club and they had been sellin drugs- so I banned the lot of them. The manager of the club had the same car as mine but I used to put mine in the secure car park down the road. One night at about 3 in the mornin there was this loud sorta whoosin noise. We looked out the back of the club and there was the manager's car in flames. The lads I'd chucked out thought it was my car. When I drove home I made sure I drove past them, slowin down so I could laugh at them shakin my head.
Dropping your guard
There was this pub near the police station that didn't like the type of doorman I employed so I could never get that 1 on my list. 1 day the landlord of the pub phoned me: "Could you come down & run the door of the pub?" Turns out the dibble had told him it's ok because 14 of their officers needed hospital treatment after a stag party had kicked off!

When I started on da doors I was a known football hooligan with a bad reputation with everyone. My mate was a doorman at Mooro's; one of their doorman was knocked out and I was called up and asked to cover. That was about 20 years ago- it all started as a favour. I was workin wi mates and family, we had all grown up together- I spent years fightin bouncers and now I was one.
The only trainin I had was a bit of bareknuckle boxin and fightin on terraces no courses or owt. Bouncers then were chosen on how well they could handle themselves in violent situations. Now its all completely different- another world.
All in a nights work One night there'd been this scuffle at the club and I'd missed it. I'd been in the toilet and people got chucked out by the time I'd come out. Went home an about my business as normal. Then the CID turned up at the house out the blue- my wife asked what it was all about an I didn't know jack! Turns out the guy who got threw out was not only in a bad way but didn't survive da night. I was taken down the station and they pulled out all plans of da club n that sayin I must've seen somethin cos he was thrown out of the enterance I was manning. I told them the truth that I'd not seen anything and I was released without charge. 3 other guys weren't so lucky, two of them my brothers, they ended up on remand at Strangeways.
Beyond the call of duty When I worked with a mobile security team, we would get called into a club to smash and bash the priblem guys, drag them outside and then be on our way. This left the inhouse doorman well out of the situation. These were my most violent times because it was so real. Over a 5 year priod I was stabbed and cut up twice, shot at close range and was on the receivin end of a couple of stomps to the head. It amazes me to think of the situations I've been involved in and all for a nights wage. It aint like the movies, where some dude is shot and they drop and die on the spot- in reality a man can be riddled with bullets or stab wounds and still walk away only to die of internal bleedin days later. In the heat of assualt everything goes into slow-mo- your main concern is for you and your mates to survive, war wounds are only felt afterwards when your adrenoline slows down.
Animals, bloody animals
2 guys were arguin in the pool room so we ran in to see what all the fuss was about. 1 guy picked up a glass & rammed it into the other guy's head. The whole pint glass shattered makin mince meat of his face, he fell to the floor screaming, holdin his face together and bleeding like a pig.
